Gymnastics Notches Top Team Score of the Year at West Virginia

Central Michigan (196.500) finishes in second place behind host West Virginia (197.325), tops Pittsburgh (196.125); Luciana Alvarado-Reid totals top score in bars (9.875), Elizabeth Cesarone ties for first in vault with a career-best 9.925.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—The Central Michigan Gymnastics team posted its highest team score of the year, finishing with a 196.500 at the West Virginia Tri-Meet Sunday at WVU Coliseum. West Virginia won the team competition, with a 197.325, Central Michigan finished second with a 196.500, and Pittsburgh took third at 196.125.
"Today was a lot of fun," Central Michigan Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "We were very focused on working the details today and it showed. The team did a really great job of applying all of the changes we have been working on in practice."
"We are excited to get back home and continue to work."
Freshman Luciana Alvarado-Reid registered the day's top score in bars with a career-high 9.875, junior Elizabeth Cesarone tied for first with a career-best 9.925 in vault, while senior Hannah DeMers and senior Ashley Veglucci both tied for third place on floor with 9.900s.
CMU'S 196.500 score topped its previous season-high of 196.250 against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 3.
The Chippewas began the day on beam. Junior Adriana Bustelo posted a 9.800, followed by DeMers' 9.775.
Floor was next as DeMers put up a 9.900, senior Ashley Veglucci tied her career-high with a 9.900, and senior Taylor Pitchell closed it down with a 9.850.
Vault was CMU's third rotation Elizabeth Cesarone totaled a meet and career-best 9.925. DeMers and Alvarado-Reid both posted 9.875s.
The Chippewas concluded the day on bars as Alvarado-Reid set a new career-high with a 9.875, which proved to be the best vault score of the day. Sophomore Lia Kmieciak tied for second with a 9.850.
Two Chippewas competed in the all-around competition: DeMers and Alvarado-Reid. DeMers took third with a 39.375 and Alvarado-Reid finished fourth with a 39.325.
Next up, Central Michigan travels to Kent State for its final Mid-American Conference regular season meet, scheduled for Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. On Saturday, March 19, the Chippewas will travel back to Kent State for the MAC Championship Meet.
