Chippewas score two unanswered goals, battle back to win season opener from 2-1 deficit; Amelia Lane strikes twice to defeat Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y.– For the second straight year Central Michigan Field Hockey won its season debut as the Chippewas overcame a 2-1 deficit with two unanswered goals to defeat Colgate 3-2 in a non conference game in Hamilton, N.Y.
"It was great to start with a win, especially on the road." said second-year head coach Jennifer Johnstone. "I think we played a really great second half and made some adjustments at halftime. And, really got a huge spark from our bench today which really helped our standard of play and our level of play. So overall to put three goals on the board in our first game, we're pleased with our result."
Colgate opened the scoring early on, but the Chippewas were able to tie the game right before halftime on Amelia Lane's first goal of the season assisted by freshman Klara Mikulaskova.
Colgate took back the lead quickly after halftime and went up 2-1 in the 33rd minute. Lane scored once again to tie the game at 2-2 on an unassisted goal with 16 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Right before before regulation ended, Central Michigan's Shannon Dwyer was able to find the back of the cage with the game-winning goal in the 58th minute, which was assisted by Pauline Klep.
"I think we had some really good connections from our midfield to our forward line in the second half for sure," Johnston said. "I think we transitioned between two presses and that really helped too, so sometimes we were a bit more conservative and setback and caught the spaces. We created some more opportunities off of turnovers and then when we're in a high press we actually caused some turnovers that resulted in keeping the ball at a higher point on the field for us."
"So again, overall, I think we did make the most of our offensive penalty corner calls, which is huge. I mean to execute on our offensive penalty corners is definitely a huge piece of success for the team because those are set pieces and we practice those a lot. So that was really positive."
Maja Halasz played the entirety of Friday's match in the cage and saved nine shots. The Chippewas took nine shots of their own, led by Lane's three.
"Obviously I hope our trajectory is up, and I think we continue to work everyday as a team to play at a high pace, to play possession," Johnstone said. "We have some tough competition coming up there's no doubt about that, but right now we're just looking at Rider which is our next game and we have one more game in New York before we head home and open against (Old Dominion University) ODU. So, we're excited to see what we can do as a team – definitely tomorrow. Hopefully all is in a positive direction, and we'll be able to build off of today."
Central Michigan plays Rider tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Hamilton for a neutral site non-conference game. The Chippewas then return to Mount Pleasant to host Old Dominion for the season home opener on Friday, Sept. 1 (1 p.m).
