CMU Women’s Hoops finds two strong individual performances, dominant 16-1 second-quarter run fall short in Chippewas’ bid for second MAC win
DeKalb, Ill. — Two games in two days laid ahead of Central Michigan Women's Basketball before Saturday's Mid-American Conference matchup with Northern Illinois, though no holds were barred in the contest as Capria Brown (Danville, Ill. / Schlarman) and Rochelle Norris (Stafford, Va. / New Hope) recorded standout performances in the Chippewas' 70-57 loss to the Huskies.
Brown led the contest with 20 points—a career-high in her 51st college game—on a reliable seven-for-10 from the floor, three-of-five from outside, her three makes also being a career mark. Despite being a member of the program for well-over a year, Saturday was just Brown's eighth contest for the Chippewas after waiting out her transfer period.
Norris put together her second double-double of the season, eighth in a CMU uniform, on 16 points and 11 rebounds—one point short of a season high. The 6-foot-5 center has raked in double-digit rebounds in three of her last four games while holding steady over 1.5 blocks per game for the season, twice marking three blocks in MAC games already.
The Chippewas used a dominant 23-9 second quarter—including a 16-1 run—to overcome a slow start that saw the Maroon & Gold fall behind, 11-2, before the midway point of the first. Illinois-natives Brown and Tiana Timpe (Stockton, Ill. / Stockton) accounted for six points apiece in the quarter, with the latter marking back-to-back three-pointers early in the quarter.
Brown's 11 first-half points made for a gaudy 22-1 margin in bench scoring at the intermission while CMU accumulated a 10-for-15 mark from the field in the second quarter as the Chippewas led, 35-28, through 20 minutes.
Central Michigan hit its biggest lead of the game—nine points—twice to open the second half as Norris scored on consecutive possessions to reach double figures and a 39-30 lead. The Huskies heated back up with a 13-1 response, 43-40 NIU, before the media break.
Brown and Norris combined for seven straight in retaliation to regain the lead just after the stoppage, but the lead changed hands for the final time in favor of the Huskies late in the third, 49-47.
The Chippewas shot seven-of-28 from the field in the second half, though Norris accounted for a five-for-eight line for 10 points and six rebounds. The other two baskets came from Brown (two-for-five) to go with a three-for-four mark from the charity stripe.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball will stay in the Chicago area overnight to reciprocate its home-and-home with Chicago State Sunday. Tip-off at the Jones Convocation Center is set for 3 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. CT.
The Chippewas return to McGuirk Arena Wednesday to host their next two MAC contests against Ohio (Jan. 24, 7 p.m. ET) and Western Michigan (Jan. 27, 1 p.m. ET).
