Freshman Madi Morson leads three scorers in double figures with 13 points; crop of newcomers fitting their intended roles early
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich — Central Michigan Women's Basketball fell, 65-62, to Coastal Carolina in the season-opener and first matchup of the 2024-25 MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, despite opening up the first double-digit first-quarter lead in 11 games dating back to January of last season.
"First half, we really came out punching," second-year Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "We did a really good job handling their pressure, playing together and keeping our composure."
The Chippewas opened the night with a 19-9 first quarter advantage, pushed out to 29-12 prior to the second quarter media break. Freshman guard Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) put forth nine of her team-high 13 points over the first 14 minutes.
CMU retained their league-leading mentality from last season on the boards, overcoming a 37.8 percent clip from the field with 11 offensive rebounds in the first half—four of which wrangled by another freshman, Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass).
"[The freshmen] came out and they weren't nervous. It was really good to see. This was their first game and for them to come out and show the poise that they had and their composure in the first half… for them to come out and start like that, we're going to be OK."
Key transfer pick-ups senior guard Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy) and junior forward Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) each notched a double-double in their Central Michigan debuts.
"The moment they stepped on campus, all these new players, they're buying in. Then all the returners, they're all just gelling and really getting along, the trust is there."
Lawson posted six double-doubles as an all-conference first-teamer for NCAA II Illinois Springfield last season; Prewitt posted 16 double-doubles for 2024 national champion Kirkwood Community College.
The wind in CMU's sails calmed after intermission as the Chanticleers mounted their comeback, foreshadowed by an 8-0 run in response to the largest margin of the evening. Coastal Carolina drew back to within two possessions in the final seconds of the third quarter.
"We got stagnant, turned the ball over too many times. [Coastal Carolina] did a good job of knocking down open shots."
CCU briefly held a two-point lead with over six minutes to play, the largest lead for Monday's visitor until a three-point play with 10 seconds to play sealed the contest.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. next Thursday to take on Michigan, followed by back-to-back home Sundays against Bradley (Nov. 17) and Oakland (Nov. 24)—both return trips from last season.
