The rookie’s new career high is the second-most by a freshman in CMU history; final minutes of the game involve errant whistle and extended replay review
DAYTON, Ohio — Central Michigan Women's Basketball freshman Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) put herself firmly inside the program's record book Sunday with 32 points in a 72-68 loss at Dayton, the most by a Chippewa since New Year's Day 2022.
"She's a special talent," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "She's getting better at being consistent from the three-point line. For her to be a three-level scorer, that's really hard to guard."
The 2024 Michigan Miss Basketball finalist landed second for points scored in a game by a freshman in program history, bested only 1987-88 Freshman All-American Sue Nissen '91 and her 36-point outing against Eastern Michigan on March 5, 1988.
The individual effort had support from a key phase Haynie has stressed in recent weeks. The Chippewas, league leaders in rebounding, outscored Dayton, 22-4, in second-chance points after they pulled down 20 offensive rebounds for the third time this season.
"Rebounding is effort. It's an attitude to want to go get the ball: we outrebounded them by double-digits. We finally did a better job on second-chance points and capitalizing on offensive rebounds."
CMU's largest deficit came in the final seconds of the first half, with a 37-30 margin for the Flyers. Morson had 11 at intermission, while Taylor Johnson (Cannon Falls, Minn. / Cannon Falls) tallied a 3-for-3 first half from the field and a team-high three offensive rebounds.
The Chippewas rallied in the third quarter with seven from Morson, six from Jayda Mosley (Cincinnati, Ohio / Purcell Marian)—a three-time high school state champion in UD Arena. Morson then scored 14 of CMU's 20 points in the fourth quarter including seven straight to push the Chippewas to their largest lead of the game, 67-62, with less than two minutes to play.
"Really proud of her for stepping up in a big way when it's close, and maintaining her composure."
Dayton went on a 7-0 run of its own late in the fourth quarter, taking the lead back for good with 32 seconds to play. An errant whistle on the steal that led to the lead change caused confusion on both sides, but opened the door for an uncontested fast break basket for the Flyers.
Central Michigan had what could have been the final possession of the contest and set up a game-tying finish inside for Johnson. Her miss was chased down on the baseline and led to a six-minute stoppage for replay review to determine possession for Dayton.
Chippewa Women's Basketball returns to McGuirk Arena next Sunday (Dec. 22) to host Milwaukee for another 1 p.m. tip. CMU has dubbed the matchup with the Panthers the Alumni Game, with a throwback theme for fans in attendance.
