Morson scores 17 points, Darrington posts posts first career double-double
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan outscored Concordia, 44-20, in the second half on Wednesday in posting a 68-57 non-conference victory at McGuirk Arena.
The win, CMU's third in its last four games, lifted the Chippewas to 3-5. CMU goes to 20th-ranked Iowa State (6-2) on Sunday, Dec. 8 (1 p.m.).
Freshman Madi Morson scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half on Wednesday as the Chippewas overcame a 37-24 halftime deficit.
"Urgency, grittiness, we didn't have that in the first half," CMU coach Kristin Haynie said. "At halftime we talked about (that). It's not about X's and O's, it's about effort. And we had to get back to being gritty and tough and we did exactly that."
The Chippewas played three games in three days in going 2-1 over the weekend at the Nevada Nugget Classic. They arrived home early Tuesday morning after a travel delay, a factor that may have contributed to the slow start.
But once they found their sea legs, the Chippewas turned the game around.
CMU forced Concordia into 10 second-half turnovers and held the Cardinals to a 29.6 percent shooting clip over the final two quarters. CMU made 47.2 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half after shooting just 20 percent in the first.
CMU held a 27-7 rebounding edge in the second half and finished 52 boards, one shy of its season high. The Chippewas finished plus 23 in rebounds, a season best.
"I'm proud of them for recovering," Haynie said. "Our defense created our offense and that's our identity. We've got to keep getting better on defense so we can create our offense."
Freshman Jayda Mosley made four of her seven 3-point tries en route to 12 points for CMU. Three of her triples came in the third quarter, when CMU outscored the Cardinals, 26-8.
It was far and away Mosley's best shooting night of the season. She entered the game shooting 19.4 percent from beyond the arc.
"Jayda, she's a better shooter than what her percentage is in games," Haynie said. "She gave us a big spark as well. When someone's hot we've got keep getting them the ball. I'm very proud of Jayda for having short-term memory. She's continued to stay confident given what her shooting percentage is and now here she is, four for seven is a great percentage."
Another freshman, Ayanna-Sarai Darrington, finished with 10 points and a career high 14 rebounds, 13 of them offensive. It was her first career double-double.
"You don't teach that and that's just effort and that's just heart," Haynie said of Darrington's rebounding effort on the offensive end.
It was the third consecutive double-digit scoring game for Morson, who made seven of her 14 field goal tries and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers for the second consecutive game.
Morson averaged 15.3 points in her three games in Nevada, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. In her last three games, she has made 52.8 percent of her field goal attempts overall, and 40 percent from 3-point range.
"She's a freshman so she has a learning curve, what's the right shot to take," Haynie said. "We're all new with each other and people are figuring out where they get their shots in the offense. Madi's done a really good job of staying consistent the last few games. She's a special talent; she's hard to guard."
