Alvarado-Reid takes home a first-place finish; Hornbacher earns a 9.900 on floor
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Following a stretch of three home meets, Central Michigan Gymnastics found itself on the road for the first time in nearly a month on Friday when the Chippewas placed third in a quad meet at Maryland, posting a score of 195.450.
Â
"It's been nice to be home the last three weeks," Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "Coming into a different flow definitely challenged us a little bit which is one of those learning moments.
"I was really happy with the process today, especially with the continued fight from event to event. It really showed the consistency in each of the athletes."
Â
Also competing in the meet were host Maryland, George Washington and William & Mary, who placed first, second and fourth respectively.
Â
"Overall we put together a solid meet," MacDonald said. "Definitely something to build off of and a lot of learning moments for us today."
Â
The Chippewas benefited from a handful of impressive individual performances. Their best score of the day came via senior Hallie Hornbacher, who scored a 9.900 on her floor routine to place second in the event.
Â
CMU earned its highest event score of the night on the floor with a 49.025. Senior Elizabeth Buttle and graduate student Ashley Veglucci shared a fifth place finish in the event, each scoring 9.850.
Â
Starting the night off on balance beam, the Chippewas lineup received a boost from Luciana Alvarado-Reid, who began her night with a 9.875 in the event. Her score earned her a fourth place finish as CMU scored 48.725 during the rotation.
Â
Alvarado-Reid also earned a share of the first-place finish in the uneven parallel bars with her score of 9.850, tied with Emma Silberman of Maryland. Freshmen Samantha Shannon and Jenna Germond tied for third with a score of 9.800 each. The bars were the Chippewas' final rotation of the night, in which they registered an event score of 48.825.
Â
CMU's vault rotation was highlighted by senior and lineup anchor Elizabeth Cesarone, whose 9.850 earned her a share of third place in the event. The Chippewas closed out the rotation with a score of 48.875.
Â
As CMU prepares to wrap up the regular season, the Chippewas will return to Michigan next for a quad meet at the Jenison Field House at Michigan State. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. ET.
Â
"(We'll) continue to get better," MacDonald said of her team's approach to the end of their schedule. "Practice after practice, meet after meet, we're looking to continue to grow and increase our team score every weekend."
