Hot Bats for Softball Lead Team 47 to a Split in Louisville

29 combined hits across two games highlighted by a grand slam by Carly Sleeman earn the team a victory and close loss.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Chippewa Softball Team has found its offensive groove – and it is rolling.
Central Michigan won the first game of the day against Longwood, 11-2, but fell in the nightcap to Louisville 9-13 in a hard-fought battle.
The Chippewas enter the final day of the Cardinal Classic with a 3-10 record, collecting two wins at the current tournament. Central Michigan and Longwood will face-off again on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. to close out the weekend.
In the victory over the Lancers, Madelyn Wallace threw a complete game for CMU; her first of the 2025 season. Wallace allowed just five hits over 31 batters faced in her outing and striking out three.
The Chippewa offense forced Longwood to use six pitchers in the outing, where CMU racked up 14 hits scoring 11 runs. The Chippewas drew five walks and only struck out four times as a team.
Offensively, Central Michigan was led by Carly Sleeman who recorded three hits with one RBI. Four other Chippewas recorded multi-hit games: Tori Briggs, London Williams, Rachel Cairo and Grace Koenig.
Central Michigan continues to be a team that is led by underclassmen but continues to gather success from all team members. Nine different Chippewas recorded hits between the two games with six of them being multi-hit games.
The game against Longwood was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lancers struck first with a solo home run.
The Chippewas answered right away in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Carly Sleeman scoring Emma Lotus who reached via catcher's interference that started the offensive rally for the Chippewas.
London Williams drove hom Tori Briggs on a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Grace Koenig laid down a bunt and Ashley Bila who entered as a pinch runner for Sleeman scored; 3-1 CMU.
Rachel Cairo charted a two RBI single through the left side of the infield which brought home Koenig and Allyssa Hollo.
The final run of the inning was scored when Tori Briggs earned a bases loaded walk for a 6-1 CMU lead.
Longwood scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, but that would be it for the game.
Keira Tolmie had a two RBI single in the top of the sixth and Cario charted a sacrifice fly to bring the Chippewas to a 9-1 advantage.
CMU scored two more in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Hollo and an RBI single from Williams.
In the game against Louisville, CMU found themselves in a 0-5 deficit after the first inning and an 0-8 deficit after the second.
The Chippewas started the third inning with three runs. Cairo singled to the shortstop to start the scoring allowing Hollo to cross the plate. Jenna Kuzara drew a bases loaded walk to score Koenig and a wild pitch brought Cario across.
Halfway through the third; CMU: 3, UL: 8.
Mackenzie Langan entered in the bottom of the third and the defense worked a 1-2-3 inning.
CMU scored another in the fourth with an RBI single from Tolmie and one from Diekman.
Louisville added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 5-10 in favor of the Cardinals.
Carly Sleeman gave CMU a heroic effort to comeback in the game when she brought the score to 9-10 with her second career grand slam in the top of the sixth.
Louisville added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
