Chippewas Strong From Start to Finish in Georgia Quad Meet

CMU falls to No. 8 Georgia but outscores Temple and Fisk.
ATHENS, Ga. — The Chippewas hit the ground running on uneven bars in the Georgia Quad Meet with Temple and Fisk.
Central Michigan Gymnastics was full of energy Friday night in Athens, where CMU outscored both Temple and Fisk, but fell to No. 8 Georgia.
The Chippewas finished with a season best 195.900. Temple recorded a 192.200 and Fisk a 188.775—Georgia claimed the meet registering 197.675. Central Michigan is now 6-1 overall on the season.
"Very proud of our team's performance tonight," Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "Competing on the road in front of a crowd of more than 7,000 was an exciting experience, and our team thrives on that energy. It was a great venue to perform in."
Friday's finish was led by the Chippewas start on bars with a 49.050. Senior Luciana Alvarado-Reid tied for third at 9.875 and junior Gabrielle Johnson recorded a season high 9.775.
The Chippewas had a strong close to the meet with a 49.025 season high on vault. Senior Lia Kmieciak marked a 9.875 to tie for first and sophomore Ava Wellmeier tied for third at 9.825. Freshman Paige Hasling made her collegiate debut with a solid score of 9.750.
"Going into this meet we really focused on the details and staying focused on our performances. No matter the size of the meet our focus has remained on our team goals. Tonight was no different. The team really stayed united and celebrated every routine."
A 48.975 team total on beam marked a season high for the Chippewas. Junior Zoie Pelfrey tied her career high with a 9.850.
"Our beam score has steadily been improving along with our performances. The meet day experience is really where we are gaining the most growth and learning how to apply our weekly corrections."
Senior Luciana Alvarado-Reid soared to a new season high 9.875 on beam and 39.425 all-around, to take first out of three all-arounders.
Central Michigan scored a 48.850 on the floor exercise. Alvarado-Reid tied for third with a 9.875 and Ava Wellmeier achieved a season best 9.825.
Chippewa fans showed up and showed out in Athens, Central Michigan's own president and first lady were in attendance.
"It was very special to have the President and First Lady there. They're always so supportive and were a big part of our cheering section."
The Chippewas are set to travel to Eastern Michigan for a dual meet on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
