Chippewas post a season high floor score to best Kent State; several gymnasts secure new career highs.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Gymnastics remains undefeated at home after a nail-biting win over Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State.
The Chippewas pulled out a hard-fought victory over the Golden Flashes 196.075-196.000 and are now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
"Really proud of our teams fight today," Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "I think we had some different people step into those leadership roles, which was really nice to see. Overall, just a great team effort today."
Friday's win was driven by a riveting season-high (49.150) floor rotation. The Chippewas were down heading into the final event and performed several stellar routines to secure the win.
Senior Luciana Alvarado-Reid anchored the event and gained her 13th floor title with a 9.900—her second 9.900 of the night, her first on beam.
"She's been working really hard in the gym to enjoy her performances. So, to see her enjoy the moments and do what she is capable of was really nice to see."
Graduate student Avah Bootz tied for second in the event with a career-high 9.875. Redshirt sophomore Heather Parker competed on floor for the first time since last season and posted a new career high of 9.850. Junior Jenna Germond also claimed a career high on the event at 9.850.
A strong 49.100 on bars aided the Chippewas' victory on Friday. Samantha Shannon tied her career high at 9.875 for the top spot in the event. Sophomore Ava Wellmeier scored a new career high at 9.850 to tie with Alvarado-Reid for third.
The Chippewas on beam put up a 49.075 score. Alvarado-Reid had a season high 9.900 and took home her seventh career beam win. Germond and Gabrielle Johnson claimed new career highs of 9.850 and 9.800, respectively.
Central Michigan posted a 48.750 on vault. Graduate student Lia Kmieciak tied for first with a 9.875, her 10th career vault title.
"We're going to continue to take it one week at a time. There's a lot of details to continue to work through and keep challenging ourselves in the gym."
The Chippewas travel to Bowling Green to face the Golden Flashes on Feb. 22 (2 p.m.).
