KENT, Ohio – Kent State outscored Central Michigan, 10-0, over the final 3:07 on Saturday as the Golden Flashes handed the Chippewas a 63-56 loss in a Mid-American Conference women's basketball game at the M.A.C. Center.
It was the third loss in the last four starts for the Chippewas, who close the regular season with a MAC game at home on Wednesday, March 4, against Bowling Green.
"It was a disappointing loss," CMU coach Kristin Haynie said. "We felt like we could have taken that one. We feel like we needed to be a little tougher in taking care of the ball, and just getting some stops on the defensive end that kind of got away from us with mental errors."
Demetria Prewitt scored on a putback with 3:23 left to give the Chippewas a 56-53 lead.
Corynne Hauser scored on a layup with 3:07 left to draw the Golden Flashes to 56-55 and begin their game-ending 10-0 run. A pair of Riley Rismiller free throws with 1:51 left put Kent State in front, 57-56.
The Chippewas failed to score in their final five possession; they committed three turnovers and missed two field goal attempts over that time.
"What we need to get better at is just playing through fatigue, for 40 minutes," Haynie said. "When we're not tired, we're playing really well.
"We've got to play through fatigue and keep our heads; that's where some of our turnovers come from, being tired. We've just got to slow the game down just a little bit when we're tired and play well together. Sometimes we get away from that and play one-on-one ball versus playing team ball when we're tired.
"The biggest part is being able to push through that fatigue and still playing hard and playing at a high level. We're playing some players a lot of minutes. And it's a physical game, so they need to be able to handle that and just push through."
Madi Morson scored 19 points, Ayanna-Sarai Darrington added 16, and Prewitt finished with 10. Darrington also had 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Hauser was the lone Kent State player in double figures with 15 points.
The Flashes made 17 of their 20 free throw attempts – they were 12 for 15 from the line in the second half; the Chippewas made 6 of 7 from the charity stripe.
The Golden Flashes are the MAC's most efficient free throw shooting team (77 percent).
"We told (our players) that they are a very good free throw shooting team, so we need to defend without fouling," Haynie said. "Some of those fouls were ticky-tack. And some of them were just us not locking in on the defensive game plan."
The Chippewas will honor their seniors prior to their game with Bowling Green on Wednesday, and then will look to the MAC Tournament the following week in Cleveland.
"This is our last home game," Haynie said. "We're playing for our seniors. Especially Taylor Anderson, being here all four years. If we go out and play 40 minutes, we're a really good team. So that's what we're looking to do. It starts in practice on Monday and then Tuesday, and then carries over to the game."
