Central Michigan defeats Marist in a five-inning run rule for its first victory of the 2026 season in Charleston, S.C.
The Chippewas split the first two games in South Carolina during the first day of the Charleston Invitational, hosted by Charleston Southern. CMU defeated Marist 12-4 in five innings to open the season and fell to George Mason 7-8 in a hard battle.
On Saturday, Central Michigan will face Siena and Saint John's before closing the tournament on Sunday with the host Cougars.
Game 1
The bats showed up for Central Michigan right out of the gate against the Red Foxes. The Chippewas charted eight runs in the first inning, scoring four before an out was recorded.
Emma Lotus started her junior season off with a bang on a triple to right center. Grace Koenig followed that up with an RBI single. London Williams tabbed her first hit of the season, scoring Koenig from second, Jenna Kuzara doubled and Rachel Cairo doubled, and CMU found itself up 4-0.
The fifth run was scored when Angela Petrovitch singled to score Tori Briggs, who reached on a fielder's choice. Koenig drove home two more runs on a single in her second at bat of the inning, then then got into a pickle which scored Lotus from third, ending the inning.
London Williams started the second inning right where the Chippewas left off in the first with a deep double to right field and scored when Kuzara drove her home on a double off the centerifield wall for a 9-0 Central Michigan lead.
To end the top of the third, Koenig found herself in another pickle, which allowed Petrovitch to score from third giving Central Michigan a 10-0 lead heading out to the field.
Marist scrapped together two runs in the bottom of the third with a double and a sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, Williams recorded her third hit of the day and scored on Rachel Cairo's single up the middle.
The Chippewas started the fifth inning with an eight-run lead, 11-3. The 12th run was scored in the fifth when Briggs scored from second via Williams' RBI single.
London Williams went 4-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. CMU tallied 14 hits with five different Chippewas having multi-hit games.
Mackenzie collected her first win of her senior season in the circle. Langan, who earned First Team All-MAC honors after the 2025 season, threw four innings, issuing five hits and struck out five batters.
Freshman Aubrey Strelow threw the fifth inning and closed out the victory for the Chippewas.
Game 2
Central Michigan fell to George Mason in the second game of the day, but not without a fight.
Brooklyn Compau took the start for Central Michigan and threw two innings before being relieved by Cierra Laska.
The Patriots scored six runs in the first two innings with two home runs and five RBI.
After a two-run home run in the first inning, Central Michigan answered to even the score at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Rachel Cairo doubled to left center and scored Grace Koening and London Williams. Both Williams and Koenig reached via fielder's choice.
In the second inning, a leadoff single for George Mason led to a score on a throwing error on an attempted steal.
Later that inning, a three run home run gave George Mason a 6-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the second, Central Michigan's London Williams ripped a double to score two more Chippewa runs, then Jenna Kuzara followed suit, bringing the Chippewas within one: 6-5 George Mason lead.
The Patriots added one run in the third, and were held scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as Laska settled in.
CMU tied the game in the fourth inning a bunt from Koenig that allowed Petrovitch to score after being moved to second with a sacrifice bunt from Lotus.
The seventh run for CMU came from a double off the bat of Kuzara, which scored Koenig.
George Mason added the final run of the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to shallow center field.
