Chippewas rank fourth nationally in scoring
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Haven't yet seen them in person? Better get to McGuirk Arena on Wednesday.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team will take on UCF on Wednesday (5 p.m.) in a nonconference game, the Chippewas' last at home for the better part of a month.
It is another tough early season mid-major opponent for CMU, which improved to 2-1 on Saturday with a 108-90 home win over Western Kentucky.
EXPLOSIVE
In scoring 108 points against the Lady Toppers, CMU has surpassed the century mark twice in its three games this season. The Chippewas totaled 104 in a 43-point win over Oakland on Nov. 8.
The Chippewas are the fourth-highest scoring team in the nation, averaging 94.3 points per game.
Senior guard Presley Hudson is tied for third in the nation, averaging 28.0 points per game. Hudson on Tuesday was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for her performances in the victory over Western Kentucky (34 points) and an 80-71 loss to South Dakota State (24 points).
CMU senior Reyna Frost is tied for 32nd nationally with 11.3 rebounds per game.
RANKINGS
CMU was ranked second in the Nov. 13 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The weekly poll is scheduled to be released today, Tuesday. South Dakota State was ranked fourth in the poll.
SCOUTING
UCF is 3-0 with all three of its victories coming on the road. The Knights opened with a win over Pitt, and on Sunday won at Mercer, which entered the week ranked 22nd in the Mid-Major poll.
The Knights are led in scoring by guards Korneila Wright and Sydnee McDonald. Wright averages 17.3 points per game, while McDonald, a Flint native, checks in at 14.7. Wright was second on the team with a 10.3 average a year ago when the Knights finished 22-11 and reached the second round of the WNIT.
UCF has held its three opponents to an average of 51.7 points per game. It ranks 39th nationally in that category.
THEN …
The Chippewas hit the road for five consecutive games. As is the custom for coach Sue Guevara's Chippewas, there are few lightweights on the slate.
They head to Virginia this weekend for the Cavalier Classic where they will play the host Cavaliers (1-2), whose losses have come to Mississippi State and Kentucky, on Saturday; and then Chattanooga (2-2) on Sunday. Virginia, which plays in the ACC, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, while Chattanooga played in the WNIT.
CMU is also scheduled to play Iona, Quinnipiac and Vanderbilt, an SEC school, between now and Dec. 20, when it comes home to face No. 5 Louisville, which last season played in the Final Four.
Quinnipiac handed CMU one of its five losses – against 30 victories – last season and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
