CMU completes season-opening homestand 3-1; heads to Virginia this weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Reyna Frost posted a double-double and Maddy Watters hit two critical late 3-pointers as the Central Michigan women's basketball team surged past UCF, 75-68, in a nonconference game on Wednesday at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas, who are ranked sixth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, improved to 3-1. UCF is also 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas trailed 66-61 when Watters hit her first bucket of the game, a 3-pointer, with 3:07 remaining. Watters hit another triple with 1:49 left to give CMU a 67-66 lead. Watters' triples not only put CMU in front, but it gave the Chippewas a shot of momentum and brought the crowd of 1,600-plus into the game.
Lawriell Wilson hit a jumper with 1:31 to play to put UCF back in front, 68-67, but that was the last time the Knights would score.
Two Micaela Kelly free throws with 1:21 left put CMU ahead, 69-68. The Chippewas went a perfect 8-for-8 from the line in the final 1:21.
"I give our team a boat load of credit for really taking over in the fourth quarter," said coach Sue Guevara. "Maddy Watters found her confidence in that fourth quarter. She only had six points, but they were six big, fat points."
LEADERS
Frost finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds for her 34th career double-double. Senior Presley Hudson contributed 21 points, nine assists and six rebounds, while freshman Jahari Smith finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
SLAMMING THE DOOR
Korneila Wright scored 31 points for UCF. The Chippewas held her scoreless in the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Knights 20-12.
"There were times that we had people there, but we were playing airplane (defense), our hands were out here instead of being up in (Wright's) face," Guevara said. "When we went to the box-and-one (defense) … you know what, they don't have another player in double figures. So she can have her 31 points."
CHASING HISTORY
With her 11 boards Wednesday, Frost is now nine rebounds away from becoming the program's career leader. She has 1,132; Crystal Bradford, who played from 2012-15, tops the list with 1,140.
"That's the goal coach gave me when I called to commit here," said Frost, who prior to the season was named to the Katrina McClain Award Watch List; the award goes to the best power forward in women's college basketball. "It's a big role I have with this team and I couldn't do it without my teammates. It'll be cool when I break it, but we still have to focus on us as a team."
