Chippewas look to extend win streak to 4 on Sunday
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 2018 Cavalier Classic started on a high note for Central Michigan as the Chippewas opened the event with a 74-61 victory over host Virginia on Saturday.
The Chippewas improved to 4-1, holding the Cavaliers (2-3) to 33 percent shooting and outrebounded the Cavailers, 38-32.
CMU won its third consecutive game and it marked the first time this season that Virginia, which plays in the ACC and last year reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, has lost the rebounding battle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas opened a 24-14 lead after the first quarter and never look back. The Chippewas limited Virginia to 21 percent shooting from the floor in the first half, after which CMU led 24-14.
The Chippewas continued to smother Virginia's offense in the second quarter, opening a 36-21 halftime lead that grew to 58-34 after three quarter.
LEADERS
Senior Presley Hudson led CMU with 22 points and six assists, while senior Reyna Frost added 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and 34th of her career.
Also for CMU, freshman Jahari Smith added 14 points and seven boards, while sophomore Micaela Kelly added 11 points.
REYNA'S REBOUNDING RECORD
Frost's 10 rebounds gave her 1,141 for her career, the most in program history and one more than Crystal Bradford's 1,140.
"Nobody but her deserves it more," CMU assistant coach Heather Oesterle said. "She's worked her butt off all four years she's been here. It's a great accomplishment for her."
SLOW START FOR HUDSON
Despite a 36-21 halftime lead for the Chippewas, Hudson made just one first-half field goal, on seven attempts. She scored 19 points in the second half.
"(Hudson) is one of those players that you don't need to say much to, especially at halftime," Oesterle said. "I think she knew she wasn't shooting the ball that great in the first half, but she's one of those players on our team that can make the adjustment on her own."
Hudson made six of her seven field goal attempts in the second half. She made all three of her and 3-point tries in the final two quarter..
