Division leaders square off on Saturday at McGuirk Arena
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Another game, another showdown.
When you're hunting a championship, they're all big.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team is scheduled to take on Ohio in a battle of Mid-American Conference division leaders on Saturday (1 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena.
CMU is 16-5, 7-2 MAC and leads the West; the Bobcats are 19-2, 8-2 and lead the East. Both teams, along with the likes of Buffalo and Miami (Ohio), figure to battle down to the wire for the overall regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament.
LAST TIME OUT
CMU overcame a sluggish first half to win going away on Wednesday at home against Ball State, 81-63. It was CMU's third consecutive win.
CMU scored 60 of its points in the paint, a season high; the Chippewas were held to a season-low three 3-pointers (on 19 attempts).
ON THE VERGE
CMU senior guard Presley Hudson is poised to become the all-time leading scorer in Central Michigan basketball history. She enters Saturday's game with 2,065 points, just six shy Melvin "Sugar" McLaughlin, who scored 2,071 for the CMU from 1980-83.
Also climbing the scoring ladder is fellow senior Reyna Frost. Frost, who had 28 points along with 20 rebounds on Wednesday against Ball State, has 1,478 career points. She needs 18 points to move into eighth place in CMU women's program history. Betsy Yonkman (1983-86) sits in eighth place with 1,495.
FROST ON FIRE
Frost is averaging 27.6 points and 18.3 rebounds in her last three games. She has made 32 of her 62 field goal attempts (51.6 percent) over that span.
Earlier this week, Frost was named the MAC West Player of the Week and the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week. Frost, a 6-foot forward from Reese, has earned the West Player of the Week Award six times this season.
FIRST MEETING
The Chippewas defeated the Bobcats, 88-70, in Athens, Ohio, on Jan. 9. It was Ohio's first loss of the season. The Bobcats have since lost to Miami (Ohio), 67-61, 10 days ago.
CMU seized control in the second quarter against the Bobcats in that meeting, building a 45-27 halftime lead. They outrebounded Ohio by a whopping 51-22 and the 70 points scored by the Bobcats ties for their second-lowest total of the season.
"I thought defensively that we did a good job of limiting one of their best players, Cierra Hooks," CMU coach Sue Guevara said. ""I thought defensively that was one of our better games."
