Plenty at stake for CMU as Broncos come to McGuirk
By: Andy Sneddon, CMUChippewas.com
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A potential three-peat, the archrival in town, and the season coming to a crescendo.
Plenty to motivate the Central Michigan women's basketball team. Not that the Chippewas need any motivation, or any reminders, for that matter.
CMU will entertain Western Michigan on Wednesday (7 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena in its second-to-last regular season game. If the Chippewas win, they clinch a share of the Mid-American Conference regular-season title, their third consecutive.
The Chippewas will need to beat Western Michigan and win their regular-season finale – home on Saturday (1 p.m.) vs. Toledo – to guarantee themselves the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament, which begins next week.
CMU wrapped up its fourth straight MAC West crown with a win on Saturday at Eastern Michigan, and, at 13-3, has the best conference record regardless of division. Miami (Ohio) and Ohio are both 12-4 and share the East Division lead.
Ohio is scheduled to play at Miami on Wednesday, and closes the regular season at home against Bowling Green. Miami closes at home against Akron.
If CMU and Miami finished tied for the best record, the RedHawks would earn the No. 1 seed for the MAC Tournament because they won the one and only meeting with CMU this season.
If the Chippewas and Bobcats – who split their two regular-season meetings -- finish tied for the top spot, the No. 1 seed goes to the team with the better record against in-division opponents. CMU enters Wednesday's game with Western 7-1 against West Division foes; Ohio enters its game on Wednesday 6-2 against East Division opponents.
The Chippewas, who have won six consecutive games, are 22-6 overall and ranked seventh in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.
THE CHIPPEWAS
CMU senior forward Reyna Frost was named on Tuesday the MAC West Player of the Week for the sixth time in a row and 10th time this season.
Frost continued her dominant season and further made her case for the MAC Player of the Year Award in averaging 23.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in road victories over Ball State and Eastern Michigan.
Frost has recorded 11 consecutive double-doubles, 25 on the season, and 58 in her career. She is the MAC's all-time career leading rebounder and ranks fourth on CMU's career points list with 1,659. She needs 18 points to pass All-American and former teammate Tinara Moore and move into third place. Moore scored 1,676 from 2014-18.
Frost ranks second in the MAC in scoring at 21.4 points per game. Buffalo's Cierra Dillard leads the league at 25.4. Frost is averaging 13.4 rebounds per game, which ranks second nationally.
Senior guard Presley Hudson is third in the league in scoring (20.3) and is first in the MAC, and 16th nationally, in assists (5.9 per game).
Frost ranks 15th in the nation and Hudson is 19th in scoring.
WATTERS BREAKS OUT
Sophomore guard Maddy Watters hit seven 3-pointers en route to 24 points – both career highs – in the Chippewas' 87-60 victory at Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
SCOUTING
Western Michigan is 10-17, 4-12 MAC and has won two of its last three games. The Chippewas won the first meeting, 83-57, in Kalamazoo on Feb. 13.
Senior guard Deja Wimby leads the Broncos in scoring at 13.6 points per game, while Leighah-Amori Wool, a sophomore forward, averages 11.6 per game.
The Broncos rank last in the 12-team MAC in scoring at 61.3 points per game and are fifth in points allowed (65.5).
NEXT
The Chippewas close the regular season on Saturday against Toledo (18-9, 10-6), which on Wednesday plays at Eastern Michigan. It is Senior Day and the final home game for three CMU seniors: Hudson, Frost and Jaeda Robinson.
