CLERMONT, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team opened the 2020 season with a pair of losses on Friday at Legends Way Stadium. The day marked the CMU coaching debut of McCall Salmon, who was named to head the storied program in June.
The Chippewas opened with an 8-0 loss to Connecticut and then fell to Stetson, 6-0. CMU is scheduled to play both teams, Connecticut (1:30 p.m.) and Stetson (4 p.m.), again on Saturday.
They close their trip to Clermont on Sunday with a game against Purdue (11 a.m.)
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean allowed five runs on eight hits, while striking out six and walking one over 4 2/3 innings in taking the loss against Connecticut.
Huskies pitcher Marybeth Olsen pitched a no-hitter, striking out eight. Olsen had a two-run single in the first inning to stake UConn to a 2-0 lead.
Morgan Gardner had two of the Chippewas' five hits in the nightcap, while freshman Skylar Coberley doubled.
Winning pitcher Chloe Temples struck out five.
Cloe Mallory started for CMU and allowed four runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking two over six innings in taking the loss. Haley John worked the sixth inning, surrendering two runs on two hits.
"Overall I think from game one to game two we made some adjustments and showed some improvement," Salmon said. "That's really what we're looking for every game. I think we had a lot of great learning moments today. It's nice that we can come back tomorrow and play the same teams and make adjustments accordingly.
"Being outside, being on the dirt, it was nice. … We know we have to get better and we will get better."
