MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team begins the second half of the season on Sunday when it goes to Kent State for a Mid-American Conference dual at the Golden Flashes' M.A.C. Center.
Both teams are trending in the right direction as both posted season-best team scores in their most-recent duals.
The Chippewas are 2-2 both overall and in the MAC after winning their second-consecutive dual last week when they posted a 196.300 score – the best this season by a MAC team, and a number that ties for 21st nationally – in downing Northern Illinois in a dual at CMU's McGuirk Arena.
That score lifted CMU's team average to 194.450, which is 38th nationally. Kent is averaging a MAC-best 194.925, which ranks 32nd nationally.
The Golden Flashes are 3-5, 2-2 MAC. They posted a season-best 195.850 in falling to Western Michigan in a MAC dual at home on Thursday. Kent State scored season highs on the floor exercise (49.475), on vault (49.925), and on beam (48.950) in the meet.
The Chippewas likewise set season highs on vault (49.125), balance beam (48.925) and floor (49.275) in their victory over NIU.
Sophomore Hannah DeMers holds CMU's highest individual national ranking, 35th on bars. She is also 55th on vault, while teammate Sierra DeMarinis is 47th on floor.
Senior Abby Fletcher is Kent State's highest-ranked gymnast at No. 21 on floor. Two other Golden Flashes hold top-100 spots: Kyndall Gilbert is 73rd on vault and Rachel Decavitch is 81st on bars.
In the MAC, CMU is first on vault, second on floor, fourth on bars, and sixth on beam; Kent State is first on floor, third on both bars and beam, and fourth on vault.
The two teams are well represented among the top five individually in each event.
CMU has three of the top five vaulters in the league, led by DeMers, who is No. 1. Katie Kowalski is third and Sydney Williams is fifth. Kent's Gilbert is second and Fletcher if fourth.
DeMers is also No. 1 in the conference on vault, while CMU's Kennedy Johnson is fifth. Kent's Decavitch is fourth.
CMU sophomore Ashley Veglucci ranks fifth in the back on beam. On floor, Fletcher is No. 1 while teammate Toshi Richard is second. DeMarinis ranks third.
