Baseball sweeps Ohio series, improves to 9-1 in MAC play
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Danny Wuestenfeld and Adam Proctor each launched two-run home runs on Sunday in leading the Central Michigan baseball team to its second Mid-American Conference doubleheader sweep of Ohio in as many days at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas won the opener, 5-2, and then completed the twinbill sweep and the four-game series sweep with a 12-6 victory in the nightcap. The Chippewas are 14-10, 9-1 MAC. Ohio fell to 11-12, 5-7.
CMU, which has won nine straight MAC games and 11 of its last 14 overall, is slated to play a four-game home series with Northern Illinois beginning on Friday, April 8 (3 p.m.).
The Chippewas and the Huskies will play a Saturday doubleheader (12 p.m.) before closing the series with a Sunday game (1 p.m.).
"A really good job by our guys," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Ohio's a good team and they're off to a good start this year, and I thought our guys did a great job controlling the weekend with our style of play, keeping high energy and all-around good baseball. I'm really proud of them."
Game 1
Andrew Taylor (3-2) struck out five over six innings for the win in the seven-inning opener. He allowed two runs on four hits and walked two.
Ryan Insco hurled the final inning for his second save, striking out two.
Down 2-1, the Chippewas scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
Justin Simpson scored on an error to tie the game and then Jakob Marsee put CMU up, 3-2, with a sacrifice fly. Wuestenfeld followed with a two-run homer, a towering shot over the 18-foot-high wall in straight-away center field, 400 feet from home plate.
It was the second homer of the season for Wuestenfeld, a sophomore first baseman who has hit safely in six consecutive games and had five hits and six RBI in 17 at-bats in the series.
"(Wuestenfeld)'s coming into his own a little bit every week," Bischel said. "He's getting a little more level, a little more consistent, and he did a nice job this weekend."
Mario Camilletti, Justin Simpson and Marsee led the Chippewas' 10-hit attack with two each.
Game 2
The Chippewas collected a season-high 13 hits, including five for extra bases, in the nightcap.
CMU built a 5-0 lead through two innings. Ohio scored four runs in the third inning off Chippewa starter Logan Buczkowski, but CMU answered with three runs in the bottom half of the third to re-up their lead to 8-4.
"Everything loosens up a little bit if you can get out to an early lead," Bischel said. "We did a great job of that. I thought guys came out ready to play, and the bullpen did a tremendous job once we did give them a lead to work with."
Proctor's sixth-inning two-run homer down the right-field line, his second round-tripper of the season, put the Chippewas up 10-4 and then Marsee gave CMU two more insurance runs with a two-run single in the eighth.
Camilletti, the Chippewa leadoff hitter, finished with four hits and scored four runs. He had six hits and scored six runs on the day.
Wuestenfeld, Marsee and Aidan Shepardson finished with two hits apiece.
Jake Jones (3-1), who relieved Buczkowski with none out and a runner on third and the Chippewas leading, 5-3, in the third, picked up the victory. He allowed one hit and struck out five over three innings.
It was Jones' second win of the weekend. He earned the victory in CMU's 8-3 win in the second game on Saturday. Buczkowski allowed three hits, struck out three and walked four.
Clayton Brock, Adam Mrakitsch, Michael Conte and Ben Vitas each also pitched in relief for the Chippewas, who posted their second consecutive MAC series sweep.
