MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Luciana Alvarado-Reid, Elizabeth Cesarone Hallie Hornbacher of Central Michigan gymnastics have qualified to compete as individuals in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Gymnastics Regionals on April 4 in Fayetteville, Ark., the NCAA announced on Monday.
Alvarado-Reid, Cesarone and Hornbacher will compete as individuals in the University of Arkansas' Barnhill Arena, with the team representation being host Arkansas, Arizona, Boise State, Brigham Young, Kentucky, LSU, Minnesota, Nebraska and Oregon State.
It is the first time since 2014 that the Chippewas have had three gymnasts qualify for regionals in the same year.
Alvarado-Reid will compete in the all-around, her first time competing in the NCAA Regional. The Cartago, Costa Rica sophomore brought home her first individual Mid-American Conference title on the uneven parallel bars on Saturday at the 2024 MAC Gymnastics Championships in Muncie, Ind.
The 2023 MAC Freshman of the Year scored a meet-high 9.925 on the event, as the anchoring gymnast in the Chippewas final event in the last rotation of the day, to claim a first-place medal. Alvarado finished 5th in the All-Around, having posted scores of 9.350 on the balance beam and 9.850 on both the vault and floor exercise.
Alvarado-Reid is ranked 51st nationally in the all-around, having earned MAC weekly honors twice in her sophomore season. She has national qualifying scores (NQS) of 39.335 in the all-around, 9.835 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.840 on beam and 9.885 on the floor exercise.
Hornbacher, a senior from Caro, Mich, also earned her first MAC Title on Saturday to qualify for the first time in her career. She delivered a 9.900 on the floor exercise as the Chippewas' floor anchor, which earned her the gold medal alongside five other gymnasts.
Hornbacher earned MAC Specialist of the Week honors for the first time this season for her floor performance against Bowling Green. In her first season as a mainstay in the Chippewas' floor lineup, Hornbacher has an NQS of 9.910 on the floor exercise. Out of all 12 meets this season, she has posted scores of 9.900 or higher in eight meets, and in the six most recent meets.
Also qualifying for the first time is Cesarone, a senior from Lancaster, Pa. Cesarone has been a mainstay as the Chippewas' floor anchor in the 2024 season and has seen action in the majority of meets on vault within her collegiate career at CMU. Her career-best vault is 9.925, a mark earned in 2023, which earned her MAC Specialist of the Week honors.
Cesarone is ranked 7th in the league on vault with an NQS of 9.865. She scored a 9.900 in the event at MAC Championships on Saturday, which earned her a 3rd place finish.
The top two teams from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from round two at each regional (who is not on a team advancing to nationals) will advance to the national championships. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualified.
The national championships will take place April 18-20 in Fort Worth, Texas, at Dickies Arena. The championship event is hosted by Texas Woman's University and Knight Eady.
