Men's Basketball Drops Matchup at Saint Louis
12/7/2025 5:23:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Saint Louis shoots 58 percent, hits 11 3-pointers and uses first half run to take control of the game; Tamario Adley leads Chippewas with a game and team-high 19 points.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Host Saint Louis shot 58 percent from the floor, hit 11 3-pointers and took advantage of a sizable first half run to gain control of the game and defeat Central Michigan 107-65 in men's basketball on Sunday afternoon at the Chaifetz Arena. The loss drops Central Michigan to 3-6 overall, while Saint Louis improves to 8-1 overall.
Next up, Central Michigan takes a week off for final exams. The Chippewas return to action at Stony Brook on Saturday, Dec. 13 at noon.
"That was the best team we've played all year," Central Michigan head coach Andy Brokema. "I thought so on film as well. Anything we did well tonight, we can do well against anybody. A very talented team, they play really connected, so if you make a mistake, they make you pay. At times we did that too. Just a really, good, talented team. Some of the runs were just long runs. We couldn't stop them."
"The No. 1 thing we're learning about our team and our guys know it and agree in their hearts, is when we get down, it's hard to make the next right play and get it rolling again. When you make a mistake, you have to channel that feeling into the next right play and some aggressiveness and not be tentative and head down, shoulders shrugged. It's probably the greatest life lesson in team sports. It's how you bounce back right away and do the next great thing and be convicted in your principles. They understand it, they just don't know how to manage those feelings yet."
Saint Louis placed four players in double figure scoring. Quentin Jones led the way with 19 points on 4-6 3-point shooting, Kellen Thames finished with 17 points, Amari McCottry scored 13 points (6-9 FG), and Dion Brown added 13 points (6-9 FG).
Tamario Adley led Central Michigan with a team and game-high 19 points to go with six rebounds and a team-high four assists. He converted 6-13 field goals and 3-5 3-pointers in 27 minutes. Jaxson Whitaker finished with 11 points on 3-5 3-pointer shooting, Nathan Clarbaut finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, Phat Phat Brooks added 10 points. Rodney Johnson, Jr. did not play.
Saint Louis took advantage of a 20-0 run early in the game to take a 25-5 lead with 10:42 left in the first half. Robbie Avila started the run by making 1-2 free throws, Jones followed with a 3-pointer, then Brown scored on a fast breakup layup for an 11-5 lead. Jones hit another 3-pointer, registered a 3-point play on a layup, then Trey Green scored on a second-chance layup for a 19-5 lead at the 12:40 mark. Amari Mccottry hit 1-2 free throws, then scored on a layup and Brady Dunlap finished the run off with a 3-pointer and 25-5 lead at the 10:42 mark.
Saint Louis went up 35-9 with 8:52 to play in the first half. The Billikens led 52-32 at halftime and outscored Central Michigan xx-xx in the second half.
"We're learning a lot of things about the team very quickly," Bronkema said. "There were some positives tonight. In the first half, our point guards didn't have any turnovers, they ended up with two on the night. In the second half, we had three total turnovers. We challenged them at halftime. We had some good random cutting tonight. We did a good job on some of the zone rotations. There were some positives and some guys got some opportunities."
Saint Louis hit the 100-point mark for the third time this year. The Billikens outrebounded CMU 40-26, converted 40-69 field goals and 11-29 3-point field goals.
