CMU tied for first in the Mid-American Conference
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan bats fell silent on Sunday as the Chippewas dropped a 10-0 decision to Ball State in the third and final game of a Mid-American Conference baseball series at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
CMU took the first two games of the series and they emerge from the weekend at 7-2 in MAC play, tied with Miami (Ohio) for first place. Sunday's loss ended CMU's win streak at nine games. The Chippewas are 23-8 overall.
"I'm happy that we played well in two out of the three games," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Now we have to learn how to really prepare and be good every day. It's part of the process of being a really good program; you can't take days off because the other teams are really good.
"When you get to the end of the year and take two out of three every weekend, you're in a good position. I guess we're happy about that, but it's really about being focused on each individual game."
The Chippewas go to Oakland on Tuesday (3 p.m.) for a nonconference game, and then go to Kent State (13-16, 3-4) next weekend for a three-game MAC series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas loaded the bases in the first inning but failed to score, and they stranded 13 baserunners on the day.
Ball State, which outhit the Chippewas, 8-6, took advantage of eight walks issued by seven Chippewa pitchers.
The Cardinals used a three-run third inning and a five-run fifth in building a 9-0 lead.
AT THE PLATE
Zach Heeke and Jacob Crum had two hits apiece to lead the Chippewas, who were shut out for the first time this season.
ON THE MOUND
Junior left-hander Tyler Hankins (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, and it was the first loss of the year for any of the three CMU weekend starters: Hankins, Pat Leatherman and Cameron Brown.
Hankins allowed four runs on three hits and walked two over 2 2/3 innings. Jordan Patty, Ryan Palmblad, Logan Buczkowski, Garrett Willis, Jack Collins and Garrett Navarra each pitched in relief.
Chayce McDermott (4-0) struck out eight and allowed four hits over six innings for the victory. Ball State, which entered the series on a 10-game win streak, is 20-11, 5-2.
