Baseball Sweeps Ohio In Home Opener
4/2/2022 8:12:00 PM | Baseball
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Nothing makes a home opener better than a doubleheader sweep.
Despite the cold weather and light snow, the Central Michigan baseball team gave a warm welcome to Chippewa fans on Saturday in defeating Ohio, 5-1 and 8-3, in Mid-American Conference twinbill at Theunissen Stadium.
CMU is 12-10, 7-1 MAC. Ohio is 11-10, 5-5. The Chippewas and the Bobcats are scheduled to finish the four-game series on Sunday (12 p.m.) with another doubleheader.
"We're 2-0 in the snow so far … so I guess we have to play in the snow all year," CMU coach Jordan Bischel quipped. "The guys did a good job competing. We played really good baseball in game one against a really good pitcher and in game two, that was kind of a nice breakthrough win for us.
"We haven't had a lot of come-from-behind type stuff so far this year, so to be down (3-0) fairly late in a seven-inning game and stick with it and win convincingly was a really good showing by our guys."
Game 1
CMU starter Jordan Patty (2-2) worked eight innings in striking out nine for the win. He allowed two hits and walked two. The Bobcats' lone run was unearned.
Patty allowed just one base runner – a two-out walk in the third – through 5 1/3 innings. Alex Finney broke up Patty's no-hit bid with a double in the sixth.
Ryan Insco closed it out by setting down the Bobcats in order in the ninth.
The Chippewas scored three times in the fourth inning on sacrifice flies by Nick Dardas and Mario Camilletti and a Justin Simpson RBI single.
Camilletti belted an RBI double in the sixth to put the Chippewas up, 4-0, and then Jacob Donahue singled in a run in the seventh.
Donahue, Simpson and Camilletti had two hits apiece to lead CMU's nine-hit attack.
Game 2
Ohio seized a 3-0 lead off CMU starter Garrett Navarra before the Chippewas responded with a five-run fifth to go ahead for good.
Zach Lechnir delivered a pinch-hit run-scoring single through the left side to put CMU on the board, and then Donahue smacked a two-run double down the right-field line to tie the game, 3-3. Adam Proctor followed with a two-run single to give the Chippewas a 5-3 lead.
The Chippewas added three insurance runs in the sixth on Lechnir's RBI bunt, a Danny Wuestenfeld run-scoring double, and an Aidan Shepardson sacrifice fly.
"I thought we did some things well early," Bischel said. "I thought we hit the ball really well in the first three innings and we kept the score manageable; we kept ourselves in the game and that's what I told them: 'We're still right in this thing, keep doing what you're doing, and you've got a great chance to win.'"
Navarra allowed eight hits through 3 1/3 innings. Jake Jones (2-1) earned the win in relief of Navarra, striking out three and walking one over 1 2/3 innings. Ryan Palmblad went the final two innings for his first save.
Jakob Marsee, Camilletti, Donahue and Proctor had two hits each. The Chippewas finished 11 hits.
"The challenge is that four games in basically 30 hours is not easy," Bischel said. "Ohio's a very good team and so we are going to be challenged (on Sunday). They're going to be excited to play and we've got to find a way to have that 'game one' mentality even though we're on day two of the series."
